Accessibility

We want everyone to be able to read, watch, and listen to Psymposia, including people who use screen readers, keyboards, voice control, screen magnifiers, or other assistive technology.
Our goal is for this website to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AA. We use the automated tool axe-core to test every page on the site, in light and dark mode, on desktop and mobile, every time the design changes.
What that means for this site
- Text and buttons meet WCAG AA color contrast in both light and dark mode.
- You can navigate the whole site with just a keyboard, and a visible outline shows where you are on each page. Select the “Skip to content” link at the top of every page to jump past the menu.
- Buttons and links outside the running text are at least 44 by 44 pixels, so they’re easy to tap.
- Pages use headings, landmarks, and form labels, so screen readers can move around them.
- Images have text descriptions, and decorative images are hidden from screen readers.
- Podcast and video players are labeled, so screen readers announce what each one is.
- Nearly all of our long-form videos have a full transcript on the page, and the timestamps in it jump to that point in the video.
- If your device is set to reduce motion, animations are turned off or replaced with simple fades, and animated images are paused.
- Pages fit small screens and 200% zoom without scrolling sideways.
- Light and dark mode follow your device setting, and you can switch between them in the menu.
Known limitations
- Players and posts embedded from other services, like YouTube, Spotify, Libsyn, and Apple Podcasts, are built by those services. If one doesn't work properly for you, let us know and we’ll help you get to it another way.
- The sign-up and sign-in window comes from Ghost, the software our site runs on, and payments are handled by Stripe. We can’t change those ourselves, but we’ll pass along any issues you report to us.
- Video transcripts are generated automatically and then cleaned up, so they usually still contain some errors.
- Our store at shop.psymposia.com runs on Shopify outside this site.
Tell us about a problem
If something on our site doesn’t work for you, email us at accessibility@psymposia.com. Tell us the page, what you were trying to do, and what happened. If you’re comfortable sharing it, mention any assistive technology you use. We treat accessibility problems as bugs, and we read every message.
If you need an article or transcript in another format, ask us and we’ll do our best to provide it to you.
